Xero increased security

Xero’s increased security on user data has changed the way you log in

Just one easily guessed password can stop your business in its tracks.

When it comes to keeping your Xero data secure, put an extra deadbolt on the door with two-step authentication (2SA) and stay safe online.

Seeing that cyber-crime has gained more prominence in recent years, practising sensible cyber safety has become a necessary part of modern life. With this rise in cyber-crime, the Australian Taxation Office has updated its online security requirements for customers of software providers, like Xero, that connect with the ATO.
As a result, it became compulsory for anyone with access to an Australian organisation on Xero to have 2SA enabled on their login by the end of the 2018 year. The same is true for customers using other cloud-based platforms.
Here are three steps to get you started and why it is mandatory when using Xero.

How to Setup 2SA

1. Download the Authenticator App

Download an authenticator App to your phone (or desktop) from the app store.

It is recommended to used Google Authenticator or Authy.

2. Sync the App with Xero

3. Logging into Xero

Next time you log in to Xero, you’ll log in as you usually would by entering your email and password. You’ll then open your authenticator app and enter the passcode to sign in.

Is this level of security necessary? Shouldn’t I be able to choose?

Our lives are becoming more digital, but many people still use and share weak passwords that can be easily guessed or fail to keep software and anti-malware up to date. For this reason, two-step authentication is being used more often in everyday situations where security and privacy are important, including access to online banking and emails.

What may appear to be temporarily inconvenient has been proven to significantly reduce the risk and inconvenience of a compromised account.
